doodoodloo: This babe is going to a beach party. She is a bit shy about dropping her skirt because her bikini bottoms are a bit floppy from them getting stuck on the rough concrete around the chlorinated pool last summer, and everyone else has new bathers. She also just dyed her hair and is worried the pink will wash out and fade if she spends too long under the waves. Does that even happen? she wonders. The beaded necklace she’s wearing was given to her by her little brother for Christmas. It was wrapped up in a hanky and tied with a shoelace from her brothers sneaker. She wears it everyday. She has a bit of an uncomfortable phobia about getting sand in her sandwiches and so doesn’t want to take them out of her bag once she gets to the beach. Anyway, is it embarrassing that her Mum packed her sandwiches for a beach party? Not really. Her Mum also packed her sunscreen, which she really hates on her skin when it’s mixed with sand as well, it’s all scratchy! Then again, she doesn’t want to have skin like her Aunty that worked on a sheep farm for most of her life and never wore a hat. Her skin looked like beef jerky and leather couches. She reminds herself that she’ll be able to see jellyfishes at the beach, because it’s one of those beaches that has heaps of them, the kind that doesn’t sting, and so she puts on her funny old green and orange foam platform slip on sandals and heads beachwards. This is a recent drawing I did, and the collage in the backdrop is one I made when I was five and went to art camp! I’ve always admired those choice of colours, even though I was so young.
